Worldcolor Trade Plants Respond to Client Needs After Oprah Book Club Selection

Challenge

Near the end of the day on May 7, the Production Manager at a major trade book publisher called her Customer Service Representative at Worldcolor Fairfield with an urgent request. She needed 600,000 copies of a title that was to become an Oprah Book Club selection and she needed them fast. The title had to be in the bookstores by May 16.

Worldcolor's Solution

  • To accomplish this tight schedule, the project required that shipping start no later than Monday, 5/14, and be completed by 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, 5/15.
  • The title went to press on Wednesday, 5/9, utilizing two presses at both Worldcolor Fairfield and Worldcolor Martinsburg. Casing-in began on Friday, 5/11. BY 12:00 noon on the 15th, both Fairfield and Martinsburg had met their commitments.
  • On May 16, Oprah Winfrey announced the title as the newest addition to her book club. Oprah's bookselling abilities became readily apparent when on Wednesday morning, before the Oprah announcement, the book ranked #14,793 at Amazon; 24 hours later it was #1.
  • Through the coordination of the CSR and the combined efforts of the entire production and service teams at Fairfield and Martinsburg, the project went like clock- work. The quality, service, and delivery expectations of an important client were satisfied.
